Let me tell you a little bit about my background. I have been a small animal veterinarian for 10 years. I was one of those people that wanted to be a vet since childhood and that became a vet because ‘I love animals so much’.
During my time as a clinician, I experienced immense job satisfaction when looking after unwell animals and interacting with some lovely clients and colleagues.
I now have completed a P.hD. in veterinary attrition and moral distress. During my studies I started locuming in different practices in South Australia and interstate and fell in love with clinical practice again.
From my studies and my experiences as a clinician I was inspired to build The Locum Vet. This is a locum platform but with a twist. My goal is that veterinarians (and soon also vet nurses and vet techs) joining TLV have a support network outside the practices and that they are comfortable setting their boundaries and limitations.
However, I have also experienced burnout and moral distress. For those reasons I almost left veterinary practice in 2016. I then realised that a lot of our colleagues were also exiting the profession and I was motivated to understand why that was. Therefore, in 2017 I began researching the reasons for veterinary clinical attrition and the influence of moral distress.
I want to build good and lasting relationships between veterinarians and practice leaders therefore I have set up a system where TLV matches the working preferences of the veterinarians (including their boundaries) and the veterinary practices seeking locums.
